Check a WhatsApp number before you message it

Paste any phone number to see whether it is a real, correctly formatted number, which country it belongs to and whether it is a mobile line. You also get the exact international format WhatsApp expects and a one-tap chat link. No public tool can prove an account exists without messaging it, so the final check is opening the chat.

Check a number

Numbers starting with + or 00 keep their own country. Spaces, dashes and brackets are ignored.

The check runs on this device. The number is not sent to DripTell or stored.

You will see whether the number is valid, its country and line type, and the exact format WhatsApp uses.

How to use the Number Checker

It takes about a minute. Nothing you enter leaves this page.

  1. 1

Choose the country you expect the number to come from. If the number already starts with a plus sign or 00, the country is detected for you.

  2. 2

Paste or type the number in any common format. Spaces, brackets, dashes and a leading zero are fine.

  3. 3

Read the result. A green result means the number is valid and suits WhatsApp. Amber means it is valid but unusual for WhatsApp, such as a landline.

  4. 4

Copy the international format for your CRM, or tap Open chat to see whether WhatsApp opens a conversation with that number.

What this tool can and cannot tell you

  • It checks the number itself, not the WhatsApp account. A valid mobile number can still be unregistered, and WhatsApp offers no public lookup for that.
  • Line type comes from public numbering plans. Ported numbers and new ranges can be labelled differently by the operator.
  • Nothing is sent to DripTell. The check runs in your browser using an open numbering database, so it cannot see whether a line is switched on.

Why the international format matters

WhatsApp identifies people by their full international number, the country code followed by the national number. Click to chat links use that number with no plus sign, spaces, brackets or leading zero. If you save 050 123 4567 in a CRM and send from another country, the platform has no way to know it means +971 50 123 4567.

This is the most common reason we see lists fail on day one. The numbers were collected correctly from customers, then stored in local format. Converting everything to E.164 format once, at the point of entry, removes the guesswork for every later campaign.

How to confirm a number really has WhatsApp

There are two honest ways. For a single number, open the chat link. If WhatsApp says the number is not on WhatsApp, you have your answer. For a business sending at scale through the WhatsApp Business Platform, a message to a number without WhatsApp comes back with a failed status, and Meta's error 131026 lists that as one of the reasons.

Services that promise to bulk check registration without messaging usually depend on automating WhatsApp accounts in ways WhatsApp's terms do not allow. That can put the numbers doing the checking at risk, and the results go stale quickly as people change phones. We would rather give you a clean list and let delivery reports tell you the rest.

Landlines and WhatsApp

Most personal WhatsApp accounts sit on mobile numbers because that is where the verification code arrives. The WhatsApp Business app can verify a landline with a voice call, so a fixed line number is not automatically wrong. The checker marks landlines in amber so you can decide, rather than hiding them.

Questions people ask

Straight answers, including the limits.

How can I check if a number is on WhatsApp?

Open a chat with it. Use the Open chat button on this page, which builds a wa.me link with the number in international format. If WhatsApp shows that the number is not on WhatsApp, it is not registered. This tool first confirms the number is valid, so you are not testing a typo.

Can I check whether a WhatsApp number is registered without sending a message?

Not reliably or within WhatsApp's rules. WhatsApp does not provide a public registration lookup, and Meta's Cloud API does not offer one before you message. A failed delivery status, such as error 131026, is the platform's own signal that a number cannot receive WhatsApp messages.

What format should a WhatsApp number be in?

Use the full international format: the country code followed by the national number, without the leading zero of the local format. For example, the UAE mobile 050 123 4567 becomes +971 50 123 4567, and 971501234567 in a wa.me link.

Does this tool store the numbers I check?

No. The check runs entirely in your browser. The number is not sent to DripTell or saved anywhere.

Why does a valid number show as a landline?

The number range belongs to fixed lines in that country's public numbering plan. Some businesses do register a landline on the WhatsApp Business app using voice verification, so treat amber results as a prompt to check, not as an error.
