Check a WhatsApp template before Meta reviews it

Paste your template header, body, footer and buttons. The checker tests them against Meta's published limits and the common rejection reasons Meta lists, such as variables that are out of order or at the very start or end of the body. It shows a live preview with your sample values and builds the JSON you can send to the template API.

How to use the Template Checker

It takes about a minute. Nothing you enter leaves this page.

  1. 1

Enter a template name and choose the category you plan to submit, Marketing or Utility.

  2. 2

Add the body text with variables such as {{1}} or {{first_name}}, plus an optional header, footer and buttons.

  3. 3

Fill in a realistic sample for every variable. Meta needs these to review the template.

  4. 4

Fix anything marked red, review the amber items, then copy the payload or recreate the template in your WhatsApp manager.

What this tool can and cannot tell you

  • A clean result is not an approval. Meta also reviews meaning, policy and category, and those decisions are not fully published.
  • The variable density warning uses a cautious rule of thumb. Meta says too many variables for the message length is a rejection reason but does not publish the exact ratio.
  • Authentication templates use Meta's preset wording and are not covered by the body checks.

The limits Meta publishes

Header text can be up to 60 characters with at most one variable. The body can be up to 1,024 characters. The footer can be up to 60 characters. Each button label can be up to 25 characters, website button URLs up to 2,000 characters with one variable at the end, and phone numbers up to 20 characters.

A template can combine up to 10 buttons, with no more than two website buttons and one phone number button. The checker counts each of these as you type.

Why templates get rejected

Meta lists a handful of formatting mistakes that cause most rejections. Variables with missing or mismatched braces. Variables containing characters like #, $ or %. Variables that are not in sequence, such as {{1}}, {{2}}, {{4}}. Too many variables for the length of the message. A body that starts or ends with a variable.

The last one surprises people. A message like {{1}}, your order has shipped looks fine, but the leading variable is a dangling parameter. Write Hi {{1}}, your order has shipped instead.

Choosing the right category

Utility templates are for updates about something the customer already asked for, such as an order, booking or account change. Marketing templates are for everything promotional. If a utility template mentions a sale, a discount or a new product, Meta can review it as marketing. The checker flags promotional words in utility templates so you can decide before submitting.

Questions people ask

Straight answers, including the limits.

Why was my WhatsApp template rejected?

The common formatting reasons Meta lists are mismatched braces, special characters inside variables, variables out of sequence, too many variables for the message length, and a body that starts or ends with a variable. Policy and category issues are the other main group. Paste the template here to find the formatting problems before you resubmit.

What is the character limit for a WhatsApp template?

The body allows 1,024 characters. Header text and the footer allow 60 characters each, and each button label allows 25 characters.

How many buttons can a WhatsApp template have?

Up to 10 buttons in total, with at most two website URL buttons and one phone number button.

Can a WhatsApp template start with a variable?

No. Meta lists a template that starts or ends with a parameter as a common rejection reason. Put at least one word before the first variable and after the last one.

Should I use numbered or named variables?

Either works, but not both in one template. Numbered variables look like {{1}}. Named variables look like {{first_name}} and use lowercase letters, numbers and underscores. Named variables are easier for a team to read later.

Does passing this checker guarantee approval?

No. It catches the published formatting problems. Meta still reviews the content, policy and category of every template.
