WhatsApp reads a few plain characters as styling. Put an asterisk on each side for bold, an underscore for italic and a tilde for strikethrough. Three backticks on each side give monospace, and a single backtick on each side gives inline code.
Lists and quotes work at the start of a line. Begin with a hyphen or asterisk and a space for a bullet, a number, full stop and space for a numbered list, and a greater than sign and space for a quote.
Markdown uses two asterisks for bold and a hash sign for headings. WhatsApp uses one asterisk for bold and has no headings, so text pasted from ChatGPT or a doc arrives full of stray symbols. The Convert Markdown button rewrites those patterns into WhatsApp's own syntax and turns headings into bold lines.
Bold works best on the one thing a customer must not miss, such as an appointment time or an order number. If every line is bold, nothing stands out. A short numbered list is easier to reply to than a paragraph, because people can answer with a number.
